Be a Sun Protection Super Hero:

Set an Example for your
Sun-Savvy Campers

It all starts with you. Kids learn and see by imitating adults and, as a parent, you are undoubtedly the most powerful role model for your kids. Before sending your kids out for a day of summer fun, make a routine of applying sunscreen together as a family.

Sun protection for children is extremely important all year round, but especially critical during the summer months when kids swim, attend camp and spend long periods of time outdoors.

With a bit of sun sense, families can make the most of their much-loved summer moments.

Here are a few ideas for outdoor summer fun:

ATTEND AN OUTDOOR SPORTING EVENT OR CREATE YOUR OWN NEIGHBORHOOD SPORTS TOURNAMENT

  • Encouraging (and watching) recreational activity is always fun! But remember to always wear a baseball cap or sunglasses, even on cloudy days.
  • About 80% of the sun’s rays can penetrate clouds on an overcast day.1

PRACTICE YOUR BACKSTROKE AND BELLY FLOPS AT THE LOCAL BEACH, POOL OR LAKE AT SUMMER CAMP

  • Swimming is a great form of exercise. Remember to apply sunscreen to yourself and your kids every two hours and immediately after swimming, sweating or towel drying.
  • Wear swim shirts and full-brim hats when swimming. A standard t-shirt has an SPF of only seven when dry and only three when wet.2

GET SILLY AT CAMP: ENJOY A WATER BALLOON FIGHT, COMPETE IN TUG-OF-WAR OR PLAY CAPTURE THE FLAG

  • These recreational activities are good fun but it’s important to take the necessary precautions on a hot day. Be sure your little camper remembers to drink plenty of water and seek the shade when off the field.

SET UP A LEMONADE STAND

  • Kids go crazy for anything that involves setting up a stand on the sidewalk, and lemonade helps prevent dehydration on hot days. Make it sun-savvy by shading your stand with an umbrella.

EXPLORE NATURE: CREATE A KID-FRIENDLY SCAVENGER HUNT

  • Kids love to get their fingers dirty! Print out a scavenger hunt list with pictures of items that are placed in easy-to-find spots around the yard. Remember to apply sunscreen as a family at least 15 minutes before heading outside and then every two hours during the hunt!
