Sunscreen: Myth vs. Fact

Sunscreen is essential to protect your skin any time you’re in the sun. Since consumers may be receiving conflicting information about sun protection, we want to help you make informed, healthy choices based on science, data and facts. Learn the facts behind some sunscreen myths:

FACT: Not only is this false, it is dangerous. When used regularly with other sun protection measures, a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher can reduce the risk of skin cancer. Sun Protection measures include the following: 1) Limit time in the sun, especially from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. and 2) Wear long-sleeve shirts, pants, hats, and sunglasses
FACT: As indicated on all Coppertone product labels, Coppertone should be reapplied at least every 2 hours, after 80 minutes of swimming or sweating and immediately after towel drying. Most people only apply 25-50% of the recommended amount. 1http://jco.ascopubs.org/content/29/3/249.full
FACT: Incidental sun exposure is the kind of sun exposure that you may not be aware. It builds up over the years from brief everyday activities, such as dog walking and commuting. This accumulation over time can seriously damage your skin. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer during a lifetime. In addition, an estimated 90% of skin aging is caused by the sun. 2http://www.skincancer.org/media-and-press/Press-Release-2011/autumn-has-arrived-but-the-sun-isnt-going-anywhere
FACT: Sun damage occurs even when skin doesn’t turn red, and all skin types carry risk of skin cancer.
