When to apply sunscreen - before or after makeup?

It’s important to wear sunscreen every day year-round, but for those who like to wear makeup, it can be confusing knowing when to apply sunscreen in order to get the benefits of sun protection without messing up your makeup. Is it best to apply sunscreen before makeup? But then, once you’ve applied your makeup, do you need to reapply sunscreen? Learn the best approach for incorporating sunscreen into your skincare routine with tips on how to apply (and reapply) below.

Should you apply sunscreen before or after makeup?

If you’re someone who likes to wear makeup, be sure to apply sunscreen before you apply your makeup1. This allows the sunscreen to help protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays without accidentally smudging or wiping off your makeup.

How to incorporate sunscreen into a daily skincare routine

Premature skin aging – common signs of skin aging

If you follow a multi-step skincare routine, you may be unsure when to apply sunscreen. As a general guideline, apply sunscreen as the final step in your skincare routine before you apply your makeup. This means that you will have used any cleansers, toners, moisturizers or serums before applying your sunscreen.

My facial moisturizer or makeup contains SPF – do I still need to use face sunscreen?

When it comes to moisturizers with SPF, some may offer sufficient protection for a primary application of SPF under your makeup. If you’re using a moisturizer that contains SPF, be sure that it’s at least SPF 30 (this stops up to 97% of the sun’s UVB rays and is recommended by dermatologists2) and that it offers broad-spectrum coverage, meaning it helps stop both UVA and UVB rays (both of which are responsible for causing sun-related damage to the skin and increasing the likelihood of skin cancer2). Also be sure to use an adequate amount to ensure proper coverage.

Secondly, in order to achieve proper coverage, it needs to be applied liberally, thoroughly, and frequently per drug facts usage instructions. The amount of foundation you apply to your face may not be enough to properly cover and protect the skin everywhere that you need it to, and you wouldn’t be likely to be frequently reapplying a full face of makeup throughout the day.

Sunscreen before or after makeup checklist

  1. Apply sunscreen as the last step in your skincare routine before applying makeup
  2. Ensure you use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30
  3. Choose a facial sunscreen suited to your skin’s needs
  4. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, following Drug Facts on the packaging
  5. Use sunscreen in conjunction with other sun protection measures

How to apply sunscreen under makeup

Sunscreen is only effective if it’s applied properly. After you’ve cleansed and dried your face and applied any other skincare products you like to use, apply at least a nickel-sized dollop of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to your face3 and gently rub into the skin. You will need more than a nickel-sized dollop if applying beyond your face to other frequently exposed places like the neck, ears, chest, hands, and forearms.

Ensure that all areas of exposed skin are fully covered by the sunscreen, and give it a few minutes to dry before applying your makeup.

Always apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before exposure to the sun and follow the directions on the packaging for use.

While sunscreen can help stop some harmful UV rays from reaching your skin, be sure to use sunscreen in conjunction with other sun protection measures to maximize your protection. Other sun protection measures include wearing protective clothing such as hats, sunglasses, long pants and long sleeves, avoiding sun exposure during peak hours of the day, and seeking shade whenever possible outdoors.

The importance of regular sunscreen reapplication

In order for sunscreen to remain effective, it’s important to reapply every 2 hours throughout the day (more frequently if swimming or sweating), immediately after towel drying, and to use a water-resistant sunscreen if your skin is going to get wet.

Choosing the right SPF for you

While higher SPF numbers protect against a higher percentage of UVB rays, no SPF, no matter how high, is able to protect against 100% of UVB rays. If you have fair skin that burns easily, you may wish to choose a higher SPF, but no matter your complexion, the more protected you are from the sun, the better.
